Tower of Babel

Genesis 11:1-9

This story, which is a mere 9 verses, took place from approximately 2242 to 2206 BC.

Imagine this:
The Tower of Babel was a Post Flood rebellion against God by Noah's descendants. According to the Genesis narrative, the people, led by Nimrod, and fueled by pride, wanted to make a name for themselves by building a city and a high tower. This tower would enable them to remain together and reach the heavens on their own, in defiance of Gods command. God disrupted their work by confusing the language of the people so they could no longer communicate. God then scattered them over the face of the Earth.

Many Bible scholars today believe the Tower of Babel story explains the origins of the multiplicity of languages and ethnicities.

Babel was located in the land known as Shinar which is always mentioned in reference to historical Babylon. Babylon was located in the southern region of Mesopotamia between the Euphrates and Tigris Rivers. Today that land is known as modern-day Iraq.
